Synonyms and Antonyms Practice
Synonyms and antonyms practice is the vocabulary-precision skill that supports varied B1–B2 writing. Big → large, huge, enormous, vast, massive, gigantic. Small → little, tiny, minuscule, modest, compact. Happy → glad, pleased, delighted, thrilled, content, ecstatic. Sad → unhappy, miserable, gloomy, downcast, depressed, devastated. Each synonym carries connotation and intensity — thrilled and content are both positive but very different. Antonyms develop the same precision in the opposite direction. The worksheet trains learners to choose the right shade of meaning for the context.
This worksheet builds B1–B2 fluency with synonym and antonym selection.

Common challenges: Synonyms are rarely fully interchangeable — small, little, tiny, minuscule differ in intensity and register. Little often carries emotional warmth (a little dog); small is neutral. Connotation traps: thin → slim → slender → skinny → emaciated — same direction, very different judgments. False friends within synonym groups: sensible (rational) vs sensitive (reactive emotionally).
For: Adult and teenage learners (14+) at CEFR B1 to B2, in intermediate and upper-intermediate classes, 1:1 lessons, or self-study. Synonym precision is a direct band-discriminator in Cambridge B2 First (FCE) and C1 Advanced (CAE) Writing. Part of the Word Building & Style collection — the natural next step is Formal vs Informal Vocabulary, which extends synonym work into register-shifting.
