Making Inferences from a Short Text (PDF)

Making an inference means combining evidence from a text with your own background knowledge to reach a logical conclusion the writer never states directly. This worksheet uses a short “show, don’t tell” narrative where every detail about the character’s situation is implied, not explained.

Second worksheet in the Reading Skills series, following on from Context Clues.

What’s inside:

  • A reference panel on evidence + background knowledge = inference
  • A short story carrier text with nothing stated directly about the character’s feelings or situation
  • Comprehension check (True/False/Not Mentioned)
  • Evidence-based inference questions
  • “Evidence or Assumption?” exercise — the key skill of spotting inferences that overreach the evidence
  • A creative writing task and discussion questions
  • Full Answer Key plus Teacher Notes
