Common challenges: Theft, robbery, burglary, mugging are all stealing — but distinguished by means (theft = general; robbery = with violence/threat; burglary = breaking into property; mugging = personal/street). False friends: German Verbrechen maps to crime, but specific German categories (Straftat, Vergehen, Verbrechen) don’t map cleanly. Verb collocations: commit a crime (not do), serve a sentence (not make), press charges (not give).
For: Adult and teenage learners (14+) at CEFR B1 to B2, in intermediate and upper-intermediate classes, 1:1 lessons, or self-study. Crime vocabulary is heavily tested in Cambridge B2 First (FCE) Reading-Use of English and Writing — particularly in opinion essays on social issues. Part of the Culture & Society collection — the natural next step is Music Vocabulary and Genres, which moves into the arts-and-culture dimension.
