Connotation: Positive and Negative
Connotation is the subtle emotional charge that surrounds words with similar denotative meanings. Slim, slender, thin, skinny, scrawny, emaciated all describe low body weight — but their emotional charge ranges from neutral to insulting. Determined, persistent, stubborn, obstinate, pig-headed all describe similar behaviour — positive to negative. Confident, assertive, arrogant, conceited — same. Frugal, careful, thrifty, stingy, mean — same. Mastering connotation at C1 is what allows a writer to imply judgment without stating it explicitly.

Common challenges: L1 connotation often differs from English — Spanish sensible (sensitive, emotional) vs English sensible (rational, practical). Many languages lack the same fine-grained connotation distinctions, so learners default to a single word. Strength-of-charge matters: thin (neutral), skinny (mildly negative), scrawny (strongly negative). At C1, the writer’s choice of connotation is read as deliberate stance.
