Business English: Meetings Vocabulary

Business-meetings vocabulary covers the professional-spoken-English context that defines mid-career working life. Agenda, minutes, action items, deadline, chair, attendees, apologies, AOB (any other business), motion, agenda item, follow-up, recap, summarise, briefing, debriefing, breakout, plenary. The functional language sits on top: open the meeting, set the agenda, call on someone, take a vote, table a discussion, summarise the action items. Combined, this is the productive base for participating in or running professional meetings in English.

This worksheet builds B2 fluency with business-meetings vocabulary in productive professional contexts.

What’s inside:

  • Vocabulary box with 30+ meeting terms grouped by phase (preparation, agenda, discussion, action items)
  • Meeting-transcript gap-fill targeting key meeting language
  • Role-play scenarios: chair a meeting, take minutes, present an agenda item
  • Multiple-choice items distinguishing similar-meaning terms (postpone / reschedule / put off)
  • Full Answer Key plus Teacher Notes with assessment criteria for meeting-skill production

Common challenges: Postpone, reschedule, cancel, defer, table all describe rearranging — but table is opposite in UK and US English (UK: table a discussion = bring it forward; US: table a discussion = postpone it). Phrasal verbs are dense: bring up (raise), put off (postpone), follow up on (pursue), get back to (respond to later). Register: meetings use polite indirect speech (Could we move on?, I’d like to suggest…) rather than direct commands.

For: Adult and teenage learners (14+) at CEFR B2, in upper-intermediate classes, 1:1 lessons, or self-study — particularly working professionals. Tested in Cambridge B2 First (FCE), BEC Vantage, and BEC Higher. Part of the Work & Money collection — the natural next step is Business English: Email Phrases, which covers the written counterpart of professional communication.
