Inversion: Formal and Emphatic
Inversion is one of the most distinctive markers of C1 written English. After certain negative or restrictive adverbials at the start of a sentence, subject and auxiliary invert. Never have I seen such commitment, Rarely does this approach fail, Hardly had we begun when problems arose, No sooner had she arrived than the meeting started, At no point did the team lose focus, Under no circumstances should this be shared, Not until the data was verified did they proceed. Two further inversion types complete the C1 set: so + adj + that with inversion (So impressive was the result that it made headlines) and nor / neither (She didn’t attend. Nor did her colleague).
This worksheet drills C1 inversion through transformation, gap-fill, and identification of the negative-adverbial triggers.

What’s inside:
- Grammar Box with all three inversion types (negative adverbials, so/such, nor/neither) and trigger lists
- Transformation: rewrite ten neutral sentences with inversion using the trigger given
- Gap-fill: complete inverted sentences with the correct auxiliary (had, do, did, should)
- Identification: spot inverted vs non-inverted forms in a formal-register passage
- Full Answer Key plus Teacher Notes on register (very formal — not for casual use) and the do-support rule when no auxiliary is present
Common mistakes addressed: no auxiliary inserted when needed (Rarely this approach fails instead of Rarely does this approach fail), missing past participle (No sooner had she arrived than the meeting starts), and using inversion in inappropriately casual contexts.
For: Adult and teenage learners (14+) at CEFR C1, in advanced classes, 1:1 lessons, or self-study. Inversion is a recurring transformation target in Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) and C2 Proficiency (CPE) Reading-Use of English. Part of the Advanced Grammar collection — the natural sibling is Cleft Sentences (It is / What), which covers the parallel emphasis-by-structure strategy at B2–C1.
