Business English: Presenting Data

Data-presentation vocabulary is the language of business reporting: rise, increase, climb, soar, surge, peak for going up; fall, decrease, decline, plummet, drop, slip for going down; level off, plateau, stabilise, fluctuate, remain steady for staying constant. Adverbs of degree refine the picture: slightly, gradually, steadily, sharply, dramatically, significantly, markedly. Combined with chart-and-graph vocabulary (bar chart, line graph, pie chart, scatter plot, data point, trend line, axis, segment, peak, trough), this is the productive base for presenting and interpreting quantitative information.

This worksheet builds B2 fluency with data-presentation vocabulary in graph-commentary contexts.

Common challenges: Verb-adverb collocations are the central trap — rise sharply and rise dramatically sound natural; rise slowly and rise gradually sound natural; but rise lightly and rise heavily don’t work. False friends with data: German dramatisch maps to dramatic; but English dramatic is often hyperbolic — significant is the safer formal alternative. Numbers and percentages: approximately, roughly, around, just over, just under signal rounding; exactly signals precision.

For: Adult and teenage learners (14+) at CEFR B2, in upper-intermediate classes, 1:1 lessons, or self-study — particularly professionals presenting data or learners preparing for academic or business writing. Tested in Cambridge B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), and BEC. Part of the Work & Money collection — the natural next step is Advertising and Marketing Vocabulary, which extends business communication into the persuasive-language domain.
