Art and Culture Vocabulary

Art and culture vocabulary builds the productive base for discussing visual and performing arts. Painting, sculpture, photography, drawing, exhibition, gallery, museum, collection, masterpiece, artwork, canvas, portrait, landscape, still life, abstract, contemporary, modern, classical, Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionist. Performance arts add their own register: theatre, play, performance, audience, stage, actor, director, ballet, opera, dance, choreography. Evaluative vocabulary: thought-provoking, moving, striking, powerful, controversial, accessible, challenging.

This worksheet builds B1 fluency with art and culture vocabulary in gallery-and-review contexts.

Common challenges: Painting (the object) vs painting (the activity) — context disambiguates but causes early confusion. Periods and movements are language-specific: Renaissance (English-French) vs Renacimiento (Spanish) vs Renaissance (German). False friends: German Künstler maps to artist; Italian opera maps to opera (the performance art) but also means work generally — context-dependent.

For: Adult and teenage learners (14+) at CEFR B1, in intermediate classes, 1:1 lessons, or self-study. Art vocabulary is core to Cambridge B1 Preliminary (PET) and B2 First (FCE) Speaking and Reading. Part of the Culture & Society collection — the natural next step is Social Issues Vocabulary, which moves arts-and-culture into broader social-discussion territory.
