Teach English in Turkey

While Asia and Latin America comprise the vast majority of English teaching positions, there are several other countries that remain reliable places for finding teaching jobs. Turkey is one of these. I’ve met quite a few teachers that have gone to Turkey over the years. It may not have the appeal of popular destinations, such as Japan, South Korea or Ecuador, but it is sometimes a wise choice to go off the beaten path. Turkey is an intriguing land nestled between the Arab world to the East and Europe to the West. It is a place with  a long history, delicious food, friendly people, inexpensive travel and beautiful landscapes. In addition, its emerging economy over the past couple of decades has procured a number of decent English teaching positions.

How much can I make teaching English in Turkey?

All reports indicate that one can expect to make between $1000 to $1800 per month teaching English in Turkey. While it may not be a place to save like parts of Asia, Turkey remains an attractive place to teach because of its rich history and culture. One does not teach English in Turkey to save money, but to experience something different that cannot be offered in Asia or South America. There are plenty of university English teaching positions that tend to pay on the high end and private language schools where teachers can expect to make at least $1000 per month. Except for Istanbul, Turkey is still relatively inexpensive compared to Europe and North America. Renting a flat in Istanbul can cost well over $600 per month, but apartments are much more affordable in the smaller cities. Moreover, eating out and food is significantly cheaper than back home and one can easily travel throughout the country on a budget.

How can I obtain a work visa to teach English in Turkey? 

This part can be a little bit tricky. Prior to 2010, many teachers taught in Turkey illegally on a tourist visa and made visa runs every three months. Some teachers did this for a few years. However, immigration has gotten strict on foreign teachers recently. It is now advisable to secure a job and work visa from your home country. It can take a couple of months to get the visa and the entire process can encompass 3 to 4 months, so be prepared to do some research if you are serious about teaching in Turkey. To teach in Turkey, you will need a university degree in most cases a TEFL, TESOL or Celta certificate.

There are many wonderful places to live and teach English throughout the world, but one should not overlook the possibility of teaching English in Turkey.
